Last night (7/11/94) was the first meeting of the Florence Kite Club in Florence, Oregon. The organizer of the group pretty much walked in and said, "No rules, no structure. Focus on family, not stunts." Meeting over. (Okay, I'm paraphrasing to the maximum degree.) :) I would like some feedback from rec.kiter's who are involved in kite organizations on what your group's focus is, whether or not you maintain a structure/heirarchy, and what you do to keep interest levels high. As last night's meeting was the first, I wasn't expecting miracles, or even a high attendance, but I'm thinking that if the group continues with little or no direction, that it will be the blind leading the crippled: not knowing where they're going, and never being able to get there, even if they *did* figure it out. :) - Trav, the "Mr. Inquisitive" of rec.kites (self-proclaimed, even) = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 12 Jul 1994 09:58:31 -1000 From: sasaki@das.harvard.edu (Marty Sasaki) Message-Id: Organization: Harvard University OIT/NSD Subject: Re: Beginning kite club - help!! Kite clubs are like people, there are all sorts of types, sizes, colors, etc. Maybe this loosely formed group will survive or thrive, it really depends on who is involved and how much work they expect to do. I believe there is an AKA publication about forming kite clubs. Give Brooks Leffler a call (1-800-AKA-2550) or send him email (kyteman@aol.com). I know of several kite clubs that are very informal (although they are more formal than what you have stated), that have done very well. I have also seen clubs like this fail as well. But the "well organized" clubs also fail. The key to success is having a core group of folks who are willing to do whatever work is necessary. -- Marty Sasaki Harvard University Sasaki Kite Fabrications sasaki@noc.harvard.edu Network Services Division 26 Green Street 617-496-4320 10 Ware Street Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Cambridge, MA 02138-4002 phone/fax: 617-522-8546 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
