Subject: Box kites and aerial photography

At the beginning of this century the workhorse under the kites was the
box kite (Hargrave and Cody type kites). Apart from manlifting these
kites were also used for meteorology and photography. In this group I
came across different kites in use for aerial photography. Never were
box kites mentioned (since I joined several weeks ago) for this
purpose.
Does anyone have experience with these kites.
Also, is there a "Cody page" on the web or addresses of commercial
kite suppliers selling Cody's?

Thanks,

Maarten van Damme

No Cody page on the Web (although there's probably a few pictures around),
but there's a Hargrave site in Australia. You'll find a pointer at
http://www.kfs.org/kites as usual.

Making Codys is labour intensive. The form seems to be that if you want
a serious one, you build it yourself. You won't be alone...

Andrew is absolutely right. Go and build a Cody. It's not an easy task (you
need more than 120 (!!!) panels - most of them reenforcement patches) but
it's worth every stitch. The cody is so incredible beautiful and graceful,
that after finishing my extended-wing-cody (it's hot pink and black, so that's
why it flies great) I built a small one (15 cm per cell, extended wings, too -
but totally black) which now hangs down from my living-room-ceiling at the
place where I still lack a lamp. I will replace it as soon as I have found
a lamp nicer than my cody - which means never !!!

If you need any help or plans, contact me.

Robert.

... go fly a living-room-lamp.

In the UK, Greens of Burnley have two sizes of carbon framed / ripstop Codys in
their 1994 catalogue...

I can get an address for you if you would be interested.

(I did email you a version of this message but your server 'bounced' MVDAMME as
an 'unknown username' ???)
