Subject: California I'll be in Sunnyvale, California from 16th May to 29th May (or thereabouts), and I'd like to meet some rec.kites people while I'm there, if that's possible. In particular, I expect to be at a loose end for the weekend of 22nd, 23rd. If you'd like to meet up, or can tell be about any events within (say) 100 miles of Sunnyvale while I'm there (no matter how small), please drop me a line. If there is a "must see" event a little further afield, I may consider flying there, so tell me about that too. You'll want to check out Shoreline Park in Mountain View (which is just north of Sunnyvale) on Shoreline Drive (easy to find on a map, or ask most any local). It is located right at the south end of San Francisco Bay and nearly always has good winds, although generally on the strong side. Most people use the field just inside the south entrance on the right side of the road, where there is plenty of free parking. Entrance to the park is free also. Beware that kite flying (at least for stunt kites) is restricted to certain areas of the park, with (I believe) a ceiling of 400 feet, since one approach to Palo Alto airport is over the park. A few years ago a little girl's single-line kite got snagged by a small plane -- she held on tightly (she had been told not to lose that kite!) and got dragged across the field and into some trees before she either let go or the line broke. She sustained only minor injuries, and got to be semi-famous for a few days. The kite was lost and I don't recall anything about the pilot, but the plane survived with only minimal psychological damage :-). Anyway, that's why these restrictions have been established, but at least they didn't ban kites altogether. If you're up to driving to San Francisco, the Marina Green generally has lots of kite activity, but I rarely get up there. There's a popular park in Berkeley as well, but I've never been, so I can't tell you where its at. Of course, there's always the beaches, or head down to Monterey where you can visit Windborne Kites on Cannery Row (address in the FAQ). > >Many thanks You're welcome. > >Andrew >-- >andrew@tug.com --------------------------------------------------- Marlin Deckert marlin@rational.com 408-496-3805 I speak only for me, myself, and I. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: 12 May 93 19:56:41 GMT From: arch@cisco.com (Arch Mott) Message-Id: Organization: cisco Systems Subject: Re: California In andrew@tug.com (Andrew Beattie) writes: >I'll be in Sunnyvale, California from 16th May to 29th May (or thereabouts), >and I'd like to meet some rec.kites people while I'm there, if that's possible. >In particular, I expect to be at a loose end for the weekend of 22nd, 23rd. >If you'd like to meet up, or can tell be about any events within (say) 100 miles >of Sunnyvale while I'm there (no matter how small), please drop me a line. >If there is a "must see" event a little further afield, I may consider flying >there, so tell me about that too. >Many thanks >Andrew >-- >andrew@tug.com Just head out to Shoreline Park in Mountain View on just about any day (weekdays in the afternoon, weekends anytime) and you should be able to find kite people (if not rec.kites people). Shoreline Park is accessed by heading north on 101 from Sunnyvale, exiting on Shoreline Boulevard (head away from downtown mountain view). Go straight about a mile. Pass by the kiosk at the park entrance and turn right into the big "parking" area. The only caveat here is that if it's a concert day (Shoreline Amphitheatre is right there), people will actually be parking there... Another thing to think about is to head down to Monterey. The folks from Windborne kites fly every weekend on the beach at some hotel just north of town. -Arch. -- Arch Mott | arch@cisco.com |"Don't know about that, cisco Systems, Inc. |Voice:(415)688-8245 | but I've always called 1525 O'Brien Drive | FAX:(415)688-4575 | inetd the ether-bunny." Andrew, Marlin is correct... Shoreline is the kiteflying place of the South Bay. Two small corrects though: 1) the altitude limit is 150 feet. 2) the girls (borrowed) kite was recovered and then purchased by Ripleys Believe it or Not for display --- Believe it or NOT! There is a local kite and craft festival 45min to an hour drive (depends on how you drive) from Sunnyvale on the 15th and 16th of May. If your interested, email me directly, since the rest of the world is probably NOT interested in details of local events.
