The festival will be held on the sand flats just outside the small village of Hermanus which is about an hours drive outside the city of Cape Town. The festival has been timed to co-incide with the Whale Festival held in the village to celebrate the prescence of the Southern Right Whale which comes to breed just offshore during that time. Flying conditions on the sand flats are excellent with very smooth winds and plenty of space for all kinds of kite activities. The adjacent lagoon provides lots of flat water as well. Weather at that time of the year is generally very pleasant. Cape Town is an exciting tourist venue and the addition of a kite festival may prompt some of you to take advantage of very favourable exchange rates and pay us a visit. If you do, be sure to pack your bag with lots of nice kites and come and paint the sky in Hermanus! Preparations for the Cape Town Kite Festival on the 30 September 1995 are well under way! The festival will be held in Hermanus - a coastal village just over 1 hours drive from Cape Town. Hermanus is situated just next to a lagoon mouth which drains during spring to provide a wide expanse of flat sand ideally suited for all kinds of kite activities! Hermanus hosts a whale watching festival during September. The Southern Right Whale comes close inshore during spring to calve. The coast at Hermanus has been called some of the finest shore based whale watching territory in the world. So if you have seen the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Hippo and Buffalo) come and see number six - Whale! We would be very pleased to have some "intenational" guests join us so if you have any queries please feel free to drop me a line! Dry mouthed competitors will line up to take their best shot at winning the sport kite competition! Buggy racers will be going all out to cross the line! The hunter will become the hunted in an all out Rokkaku Challenge! Spectacular, colourful creations will take to the air in a display of kiting artistry! The question is - Will you be there? The inaugral Noordhoek Fun Fly will be held on Saturday the 16th of December 1995 down at Noordhoek Beach. The event will run from 9:00am till sunset and beyond for the hard-core! A full program of exciting activities has been planned, starting with a buggy race at 9:00am. This will take the form of either a three point circuit race or a pursuit race depending on conditions. The event will start promptly at 9:00am so aspiring buggy pilots are asked to be there by 8:30am for the pilots briefing. The sport kite competition will begin with a pilots briefing at 10:00am. The competition will consist of two compulsory manouvres (which will be detailed at the briefing) followed by a 2-5 minute precision routine of the competitors own design. Competitors must fly their own kites. A single line mass ascension should provide a spectacular display at 12:00pm. All you need to take part in this is a single line kite! Participants should line up in the arena at 11:45am with their favourite single liner (and an assistant for the launch). A signal will be given at 12:00pm and all the kites will rise gracefully into the sky! Thats the theory anyway! The mass ascenscion could be followed very shortly by the untangling competition! But dont get stressed - Its all part of kite flying! Two Oclock in the pm and it is time for the hexagonal warriors to gather! Bring out the Rokkakus! The rules are simple - Spine length must be 2 metres or more (OK, OK this time we will let you slip your 20cm secret weapon into the fray! But start making a real battle Rok for next time!) Teams must consist of 2 or more people and should have a name and be readily identifiable. No cutting line will be permitted. Three rounds of 10 minutes will be fought. Last kite up wins the round! Once the wounds have been patched a demonstration of team flying by some of Cape Towns teams will take place. So settle down around the arena at 2:00pm and enjoy the display! A builders competition will take place throughout the day. Entrants are requested to have their kites at the announcers tent by 11:00am for ground judging. Flight judging will take place once the kites have been judged on the ground. Two categories of competition will take place - A professional category for those who make a living from kites and an amateur category for the hobbyists. The judges have informed me that the minimum acceptable bribe is R10000 in used, unmarked notes! Teddy bear parachuting and Sweet Drops will take place throughout the day. Dont forget your wallets as a fundraising auction of fantastic kites >From the local manufacturers will take place at 5:00pm! Refreshment will be on sale throughout the day. See you there! -- __________________________________________________________________ Rodger Duffett Internet Address: rodger@ray.uct.ac.za Dept.
