(1-800-827-6364) Subject: Chicago South Suburban Kite Festival The South Suburban Kite Festival in Homewood, Illinois, turned out to be a great time for its first appearance. Kirk Romandine and a host of local kite supporters put the festival together using whatever advice and assistance they could get. That included plenty of E-Mail to fliers around the country. The weather looked forbidding all day, but never did turn bad. In fact, by late afternoon the sun even managed to appear. Winds were questionable early in the day, so much so that the competition field had to be moved. There were fifteen individuals and three pairs competing for some beautiful stained-glass trophies. Among the competitors were CSL members Bob Roehl, and Phil Broder in individual and Rudy & Jane Bouhuys in pairs. All competitions were Open class Ballet, which allowed for a vast degree of difference in both skill and concept. Single line fliers were not forgotten. Mitch Rosset wowed a number of people with his monster deltas, even going as far as to lift a chair into the sky. Charlie Sotich, Pat Sotich, and Ed & Emily Liphardt were on hand to teach the younger attendees (and the visiting police officer) how to make sled kites. One of the more spectacular events came after the competition when a 7-person team started performing some ad-lib ballet. That may not sound so incredible until you take into account that these 7 people had never flown as a team before! With Bob Roehl at the lead and Bob Neiman bringing up the rear, these fliers showed the crowds some great action. This was a well done festival, with a lot of attention to detail and a true air of kiting camaraderie. Kirk Romandine of K.R.Kites and all his staff deserve a hearty 'Congratulations' for a job done well. Heres wishing you well for next year!
