Could someone please explain the difference between Dyneema and
Spectra?

Thanks,

Michael Graves

Dyneema is what Region 13 members who are not Canadian members use
with stunt kites (and other uses) ;-)

Spectra is the Allied Signal name, and Dyneema is from DSM (I don't
know what country).

DSM is Dutch State Mines (believe it or not). DSM was originally a government
owned company which operated Holland's coal mines, but evolved into a chemical
multinational, and was privatised. They specialize in bulk plastics,
but also have high tech products like Dyneema (trademark). One of the (main?)
applications of Dyneema is in bulletproof vests.

Not from region 13 or from Holland, a quote from SK (without I or II)
by Servaas & Nop:

BEGIN QUOTE

Dyneema/Spectra. The best base material for kite line fibres to date
is High-modulus-polyethylene (HMP). The Dutch national 'chemistry
pride' DSM has patented the process of aligning the super-long molecules
within each fibre strand...

[clip]

Next to Dyneema there is Spectra fibre, which is produced in the
United States, and is of similar quality.

END QUOTE
