I have been to 5 out of 10 Meetings, I would like to let you know my experiences. The meeting is scheduled from 16 to 18 June, 1995. The scheduled has not been published yet but if it follows last year, there will be a short welcome ceremony on Thursday night with plenty of kite pin pushers around. Most likely the auction will take place on Friday night in the riding hall and there should be a big party and dance in the riding hall on Saturday night. If you get in the right click then there are a lot of private parties going on at Fano. If I am correct in saying so, this is the largest meeting in the world of kite fliers. So expect 3-5,000 persons there, I am guessing. This is a meeting of kite flyers. It is not sponsored by any company. The people who are organizing this are not paid for this. They are donating their own personal time to the organization of the meeting. So please be very kind to them. The organizers are: Rainer Kregovski, Sievekingslle 114d, 20535 Hamburg, +49-040-21-38-48 and Wolfgang Schimmelpfennig, Kaetnerweg 28, 22393 Hamburg, +49-640-66-46 fax +49-040-640-00-00 The weather can vary from one extreme to the other, so be prepared for it. It is usually pleasant with mild wind. - I have never seen it snow in June. - It can rain non-stop for days. - It can be cold. - It will be windy most of the time. - The winds can be light to very strong - It can be very sunny and warm to hot. - The wind has been known to stop and the light whirl winds go across the beach, then the wind comes from the opposite direction. - The wind is constant, no gusts. So be prepared for all weather conditions. - warm parkas - rubber boots - rain suits - bathing suits - head and kneck covers against sun and wind burn. - sun lotion For your kites, plan to bring - light wind versions - normal wind versions - strong wind versions - storm versions, e.g. with venting in the sails - empty sand bags to be filled with sand to hold your kites down. Your ground anchors(dog stakes) don't hold in the sand. - spare parts How to get to Fano? If your coming from outside Europe, then I suggest you consult your countries main kite club for special deals. Within Europe, you can fly, drive or take a train. If you are flying then probably the best way is to fly to Hamburg, Germany then take a train to Esbjerg in Denmark then the ferry to Nordby on the island of Fano. If you take the train, then you probably have to take a train to Hamburg then follow the above for the High flyers. If you drive, then you can carry much more. The fastest way is to drive to Hamburg. The take the A7(E45) Flensburg, where you will cross the border into Denmark. In Denmark you must slow down. I am not sure what the speed limit is but it is posted at the border (100Kph or 120Kph) on the freeway. It is 80Kph on the side roads, 50 Kph in towns and 30Kph on the beach of Fano. You must drive day and night with your headlights turned on. From Flensburg drive north on the E45 to exit 70 "Abenra (Aebenrae)". Take the highway 24, now max 80Kph, through Gabol, Gram, Rebe on to Esbjerg. There are several Ferries leaving from Esbjerg. The last turnoff to ferries is the one to Fano and it is marked FANO. If you are coming from Great Britain, there are ferries to Ebsjerg from Newcastle(18 hours) and Harwich (15 hours). There is another ferry from upper Scandinavia leaving >From Thorshaven which takes 33 1/2 hours. Accomadations: Hotels are quite expensive. Camping if you bring your tent or mobile home is cheap. Camping bungalows are not to cheap. Houses can be rented for reasonable rates, however most are already rented by the start of the year and most are only rented from Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday. You can't get many anymore, say from Wednesday to Wednesday, unless you want to pay the extra days, say from the proceeding Saturday to the following Saturday, which means two weeks. Camping and Hotels are not so restricted. Do Not Camp anywhere except in authorized camping areas. This even includes a couple hours sleep at parking places on the freeways. The Danish police just don't like it and most likely you will be fined, it is forbidden. For accomadations call the Fano Tourist Bureau at +45-75-16-26-00 or Fax +45-75-16-29-03. They are open from 0830 to 1730 Monday through Friday and Saturday from 0900-1300 until the first of June. As of June they are open 0830-1830 Mon-Fri, 0900-1900 Sat and 0900-1700 on Sun. At rented house and camping bungalows bring your own bed lines. Blankets, Cooking and eating utensils are almost always provided. If you are tenting then you must bring everything. There are about 11 camping Sites, the more popular among kite flyers are: Feldberg Strand Camping Tel. +45-75-16-24-90 Feldberg Familiecamping +45-75-16-36-80 Ro-Land Camping +45-75-16-32-36 Rodgaard Camping +45-75-16-33-11 The Ferry to Fano: During the day it runs most of the time every 20 minutes e.g. 0900-0920-0940. The schedule varies during early and late hours. Plan to wait a long time if you arrive Friday, Saturday or Sunday or if you depart Saturday, Sunday or Monday during the kite meeting. Special prices for the kite meeting are available from Hans Soyka >From now until the first week of May, paid in advance. The price in 1994 for a normal auto with 1 person was DM44. I think this was about half the normal price. The fare for the next person is very cheap. You can contact Hans at in Berlin at +49-030-712-2600 monday to Friday from 1900 to 2100 only or write him at: Hans Soyka Lindenstr. 18 D-12207 Berlin Germany Or Fax him at +49-030-712-2600 Kite Parts: There is a kite store in Nordby and it has a reasonable selection if kites and some parts. They are not cheap and their opened hours are a bit irregular. Plan to bring any spare parts you might need with you. The selling of kite on the beach is not allowed, so don't expect to find part or kites there. But if you know someone, the more power to you! Auto Repairs: There are a couple private repair shops on the island but official dealers can be found only in Esbjerg e.g. VW/AUDI. I would suggest getting a ADAC Euro-brief or similar that pays the extra transport costs such as towing and ferry to the authorized garage in case of a repairs e.g. if your auto is still under warranty. Eating Out: Mostly are expensive but look around there are some good prices particularly if you like fish. Near the Ferry in Nordby is a less expensive restaurant. Watch out for the alcohol, it is very expensive and can easily cost more then your meal. Eating In: Many food and drink product are expensive so plan to bring as much as possible with you. - Cheap and very good is all milk products e.g.Yoghurt, cheese. - Reasonable is fish and bread. - Expensive compared to Germany is: - vegatables - meats - fruits - Very expensive is all alcohol products, so if you like beer, bring it from Germany where it is half the price or even better. Even Danish beer is cheaper in Germany. Daylight hours: It is bright from about 0230 to 2200. The darkest, though still slightly light out is from 2300 to 0130. It take a long time to get dark but there is night flying. Banking Hours: The Sparkasse near the ferry in Nordby is open 0930 to 1600 Mon-Fri. On Thursday it is open until 1800. Danish Krone is the accepted currency though German Marks are sometimes accepted. At the auction German Marks are preferred. Pins and official sweat shirts should be paid in German Marks. Eurocheques are accepted overall. Visa and MasterCard are accepted more often then in Germany. Have a good time in Fano, and look me up when you have a chance. I will be in the group of four line fliers near Fanobad most of the time.
