Have had occasion to do a number of repairs and have had a lot of luck
with ripstop tape. I've just stuck it on, rubbed it down well with the
edge of a coin and gone on flying --- but then, I don't sew, so the
thought of putting a seam together again hasn't crossed my mind.

P.S. If you've really torn the kite up (and it's not a competition one),
you might want to put some tape on the other side to balance it a bit -
or make a pretty design...

Kind of a laissez faire approach to flying

I have a small stunter made of ripstop which managed to get punctured over
summer (in this part of the world).

The hole does not seem to be growing but should I do something about it?
A simple sow back together or a small patch?

I am new to ripstop and am not sure what to do.

Thanks for any info

It's best to patch it because even if it's not spreading now,
it may start before too long and you'll end up with a useless
sail.

You can buy ripstop repair tape. It comes in various colours
and has a strong self-adhesive backing. Cut a small patch and
stick it on the hole. I normally do it both sides of the hole
to prevent fraying. The tape is cheap and most kite dealers
will sell you small strips (they may even have an odd piece
in their draw that they might give you).

A cheap alternative is to use that brown, thin parcel tape.
It's ugly, but light and sticks well - I use this in emergencies
to strap all kind of kite bits together!!!

If you can sew, get a piece of the same type of fabric and just sew a
patch on. I would use two rows of stitching.

I've accidentally pushed a soldering iron or snipped a sail with
scissors and have used star shaped patches of a contrasting color to
fix the damaged area. Some folks have asked to have these stars added
to their kites...

Ripstop tape works also. I usually use two pieces of tape, one on each
side to repair a hole or a tear. The high wind kites that Storm Front
uses have several patches using tape and have held together for
several months...

Andrew's tips on using rip-stop repair tape:

1) *White* tape on the back of the kite shows up least on all colours.

2) Cut the corners of the tape to be curved - sharp corners give it a point
   to peel from

3) Peter Lynn says that the best stuff in the world is a clear adhesive film
from Bainbridge, but I don't know what it's called and havn't seen it
anywhere other than in Peter's bum-bag.

4) Sew it in place for an effective repair

5) I don't always follow my own advice.

Hello Paul,

if the hole in your kite is not too big, the best method to fix it, is a small
piece of self-adhesive ribstop.
Contact your local kite dealer. He should have the right colour.

If you prefer to fly in strong winds, you should sew up the piece with the sail
of your kite.

Many windy greetings from Germany

Hope my english is not too poor.

Of all the repair materials I have used... 3M Scotch brand Clear Plastc
Tape - $2 at your local hardware store is THE BEST I have EVER found!
Round the corners and tape front & back.
Clear shows less than white!
We use translucent fabric and ANY color will show your patch... reminding
you of that moment of stupidity whenever you fly that kite.
Thanks, but I don't need reminders.

Thanks for the info.

I have sent my parents to the local Kite shop (~5hrs drive away)
to get some ripstop tape.
