Subject: Getting wrinkles out of ripstop?

Hi all -
I'm in the midst of an applique project in which I'm using up a
lot of the scraps of ripstop I've accumulated.
Unfortunately I've been pretty careless in storing the ripstop so
some of it is badly wrinkled, and/or has sharp creases in it.
I've had some luck in laying out the pieces under a large piece
of glass for many days, but that doesn't really help with the deeper creases.
Anyone have any other ways of 'smoothing out' scrap ripstop?
(yeah, I know, next time roll it up!!! :-)
Thanks - Jo.

Jo,

have a hot shower with your scrap ripstop pieces, then hang them
to dry. They will not be like brand new ripstop from the roll, but smooth
enough to work with.

Smooth Scraps

Joanne,

RE your problem with wayward ripstop...simple solution...iron it!!! I'm
not trying to be funny...it really does work...obviously you don't want
the iron too hot. A setting well below the steam setting should work just
fine. (DO NOT USE STEAM!!!!) I've never had any problems ironing
ripstop...no, the resin won't burn away...the nylon wont shrink...the
nylon won't turn brittle...none of the old wives tales..just unwrinkled
ripstop!! There may be one minor problem...If you have the same disdain
for irons that I have, you might ask Lee to try it...and don't tell him I
recommended same!

Think kindly thoughts.

Amazingly enough (especially for my husband, who chuckles
everytime I have to ask him WHERE he keeps the iron...), I did try ironing
the ripstop on low setting (no steam); however, the ripstop tended to take
on a kind of wavy surface without getting the wrinkes out - in effect I
made it worse (come to think of it, that's how most of my ironing turns
out - I'm just not cut out for this domestic goddess stuff), so I assumed
one simply does not iron ripstop... but so far I've received enough
suggestions to give it another try. I think part of the problem was that
the surface I was ironing the ripstop on was not very smooth & rigid -
I'll try the floor (next time we clean it....)

Some useful suggestions I have rec'd via e-mail:
Tom from the U.K. wrote advising to make sure to iron the side
without the surface coating.

Allan Charlton e-mailed me his method: "I put the fabric between
two flat surfaces and heat the whole thing with a room heater for an hour
or two (go and have dinner, watch TV for a while, update the kite project
drawings, clean out the garage - you get the idea)."
    <<Clean out the gargage??? I think not!>>

Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll go dust off the iron & give
it another try, or go take a shower with my ripstop (hmmm), or as one very
wise person mentioned, just live with it, since the finished kite will
soon get wrinkled enough that no-one will know the difference :-)

- Jo (who place first in her high school on a standardized test for the
Betty Crocker Homemaker Of Tommorrow competition. It was as funny then as
it is now.)

I've iron ripstop in the past and will do so in the future. Works great (well,
for me it does). Do yourself a favor though, get an ironing board and keep
that iron set on low to medium. A higher setting will cause shrinkage.

Best part about using an ironing board is you can stand up, saving your
back from great pain!

Of course your mileage may vary.
