This reminds me of my days just out of college (a *very* long time ago),
when I was sharing a house with 3 other guys. As we were all partyers at
the time (of course I'm not that kind of person now!), we would find unusual
things to do while we were, um, "chemically impaired". One of those was hot
air balloons built with dry cleaning bags. These bags are long (to hold
coats and the like) and very light. You take two balsa sticks, fasten them
in the mouth of the bag in a "x" shape, attach small candles to the balsa,
inflate the bag with air, then light the candles. Presto! Hot air balloon.

There was one time the air was dead calm, so we tied some thread to the
balsa, went out on the sidewalk with the ballon, and walked it like a dog.
Then we let it go. It floated serenely up in the air...until it hit a wind
layer, whereupon it folded up, caught fire, and serenely floated to the
ground, a small meteor of a fire ball. You can imagine we were impressed.

Did you happen to go to Boston University with my
brother Henry? He used to do the same thing with his housemates.
Except he used plastic drinking straws instead of balsa. You
could burn little holes into the straws to hold the candles.
It was so neat to watch it go up into the calm night sky!!!
DISCLAIMER: Unfortunately, it is mighty dangerous...
there is no way I could repeat that stunt where I live, that's
fer shure!

Specifically, I am searching for info on a very big hot air balloon

Well I don't know about all of the balloon events held in New Mexico, but
I do know about the Balloon Fiesta held 1st week each October.

You should be able to get some good info by calling (505) 821-1000.

Hope this helps
