There is something very magical about these festivals. Teams from all over Indonesia and from around the world all fly together. Sari Madgid and Mr Nyoman offer their hearts to everyone attending. Their hospitality is almost overwhelming. A wonderful lady, who has been involved with kites for many, many years, said to me "After every kite festival I have a cry". Take a whole box of tissues if you go to Indonesia. It is almost heartbreaking going home and leaving so many good friends. Last year there were teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Netherlands,Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. (I think I have forgotten some) as well as about two hundred Indonesian kitefliers. The teams from Indonesia fly many traditional kites which often feature birds and butterflies, but also include some which absolutely amaze you. One last year was a full size polystyrene lion, covered with fur and complete with claws and everything. It had only tiny wings though, so the team which flew it had to run like you wouldn't believe! There was a huge crowd as the festival was in the very centre of Jakarta. Every time the kite was (briefly) in the air, there were roars of encouragement, just like at a football match. There was something organised almost every second of the day, and the FOOD was almost better than the kites. Registration is very reasonable and I believe includes accomodation, transport and food. Garuda are offering 50 0iscount on fares to international kitefliers registering for the festivals. Indonesia is a very beautiful country and I can't think of a better way to see it. In Jakarta most of the power lines are covered with the remains of the little lyang-lyang that the children fly. Every where you go you see them flying.
