When put to the test (I don't know the full story but I think that someone hit another kite fliers parked car), it turns out that our club insurance doesn't cover it. I need to get proper cover quickly. Can anyone help? I'd like to build a group of responsible fliers who want proper 3rd party insurance cover. I'd want the insurer to *know* that he'd be covering *BIG* kites, power kites, buggies, boats, ski-kiting, manja, Rokkaku etc. used by various fliers in all parts of the world. I'd want an excess of (say) $1000 payable by the claimant to eliminate trivial claims. The starting price for an unusual policy like this (even if it were for something with a very low risk, such as tiddlywinks) is UKpounds 500 (say $750). The actual charge may be considerably more. If you want this sort of cover, please mail me and I'll see if we can get enough people together to make the charge per person low enough to be reasonable. Please indicate how much you think is reasonable to get this off the ground. Personaly, I think that I'd be happy at $50 for proper cover. I'm not trying to make money out of this - if we get more people interested later, I would reduce the charge and refund some money to the pioneers who started at a higher price. Any Takers? Would the AKA be willing to spread news of this if it were to go ahead? I'm not trying to replace the AKA insurance scheme, merely to provide full cover to those who need it (like me!) who can't get cover through the AKA. -- Work: gaffer@plx.com Phone: +44 793 614 110 Fax: +44 793 614 297 Play: andrew@tug.com Phone: +44 256 464 912 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1993 15:48:06 -1000 From: kyteman@aol.com Message-Id: <9308092148.tn32421@aol.com> Organization: Division of Applied Sciences, Harvard University Subject: Re: insurance Andrew has asked about AKA's willingness to spread the word if he can come up with coverage for power kiting activities. Other rec.power.kiters may have an interest in my reaction, hence this open response. I can't speak for the Board or the pertinent committees of AKA, but my gut reaction to your query is, sure. AKA's current liability coverage applies only to members (no matter what their origin) flying kites in the US only. I'm not sure any underwriter except perhaps good old Lloyds would be interested in providing worldwide coverage. However, I think that, rather than your going off separately, possibly duplicating efforts already under way, it might be a good idea to work with the AKA PK committee (Dean Jordan, chair) to investigate possiblities (some of which I've already started to investigate) and make specific recommendations. I think you would have a stronger case to make to an underwriter if everybody's together. Lest ye think that involving the organized hierarchy of AKA is burdensome, believe me, the AKA Board can and has acted quickly WHEN A PROPOSAL IS COMPLETE AND SOUND. But the first step is to develop something *concrete* that they can consider. Good. I'm looking at several ways to cover the insurance problem. *Some* of the possibilities include: Persuading the AKA to provide all risks (all kites, all activities, all times, all locations) cover to those who require it. Joining a land-yacht club for buggy cover. Starting up my own group to obtain group cover. For now, I'm just trying to (1) solve an immediate, pressing problem and (2) find a good long-term solution. I'm happy to co-operate with anyone that can help me and consider anyone's proposals. I will be taking up the Power Flying problem with Dean Jordan ASAP.
