I wish to build my daughter an unusual looking kite. Something really
neat that cannot be found in stores. Any ideas or plans?

I am looking for advice for my next purchase. I have a Griffin three stripe, a
stack of three trilbies, and a fighter.

I was thinking of a Backtracker or flexifoil or Quadrifoil. I like the
Backtracker, (smaller and easier to learn on Rev). The Quadrifoil may be a
smaller step before a full blown Rev. I don't know much about the flexifoil.
Is it just a delta with a different shape?

I'm also thinking ultra-light. I have pretty much settled on a Griffin SUL. It
seems the best for the money.

The Quadrafoil is good to learn on, nothing to break. From what I've
heard the Backtracker is different flying than the REV or REV II (what I
learned on). The Ultra suggestion is not bad. The Ultra comes in vented
or non-vented versions and the standard bridle allows for either quad or
dual flying. At NY the Magical Mystery Tape Pairs event, the Ultra pair
seemed to be the pair of choice and they did fly nice. They are a light
kite to fly. At a quad, there are different things that can be done with
a quaded delta than a rev or foil or decca. Some flyers like one thing or
the other better. That is personal preference.

Best advice, find flyers and ask to try their kites.

Bob,

I just bought an Ultra. Its a dual line or quad line delta. Excellent low to
moderate wind performance. Advantage ultralight spars are available. In dual
line mode, the kite is amazingly quick and tight spinning. It's got a strong
oversteer at the factory bridle setting, so it's easy to do radical stunts. In
quad line mode, it's even more fun to fly. The kite just dances across the
wind window, flying backwards, forwards, upside down, etc. It spins about its
center like it was on an axel. It's pretty easy to do some surprising things
on four lines. I've had it less than a week, so I have barely scratched the
surface, but it's definately the favorite kite in my bag right now. There's a
detailed review in the summer issue of American Kite that seems to match my
limited experience with the kite. If you want a quad line but would rather
have a delta shape (and pretty cool graphics), then go for the Ultra.

Cheers, George

Hi, I see that no news is posted here! Wow I can hardly believe it.
Well I just returned a week ago from the Long Beach International Kite
Festival. I was only there Sat & Sun but was in on breaking the northern
hemisphere record for the most kites in the sky at one time in one place!!!
I don't have the exact count but it was over 4000! Thanks to several trains
of kites that looked like the each had hundreds inline.
Does anyone out there buggie? How about quad liners and fighters?
Well anyhow now that rec.kites is on SCN don't be to shy to use it. L8R ;)

Re: Long Beach IKF...
There were 4663 kites in the sky on Sunday. A new record for the western
hemishere!
Fighters had a great competition on Friday.
Buggys were out most every day on the beach south of 10th. Street.
The beach is a state highway, so access was limited for buggys directly in
front of the main arena.
Glads you had a good time, hope we see you back next year.

The "trains" with the trailing kite anchored to the ground are arches.
If you were to inspect these closer you will find that the kites lack
a cross spar. The kite is sewn directly onto the line which then acts
as the cross spar. There was one arch that was an exception. Someone
had a 500 kite Ohashi Arch train. This arch could be flown as a
straight train or an arch.

One advantage of arches is their stability of flight. On Tuesday and
Sunday the long trains were put up. On each day there were "train
wrecks" that resulted in some pretty horrendous tangles. On the other
hand, the arches were put up nearly every day. Most flyers with
arches tended to put them up in close proximity to each other (anchors
within a couple feet of each other). There was not one tangle amongst
any of these all week. By doing this it provided some interesting
photo opportunitys from underneath the arches. The kites appearred to
be flying in all directions due to the angles and positions the arches
were being flown.

If anyone is interested in learning more on arch construction, I will
be teaching a class at Fort Worden next year (March 1-3, 1996).
