I just talked to a Korean exchange student here at Everett Community College and showed him some of my fighters. He taught me what they call the different kites in Korea. Here goes - remember, my Korean is not so good! Bang Pe Youn = the traditional rectangular fighter with a round hole. 'Bang' is pronounced something like a cross between bong and bang. the g is very short, almost like it's cut off before being finished. 'Pe' is pronounced pretty much like it looks, short e or long a. 'Youn' is pronounced like young without the g and with a very short n Youn means kite, Bang Pe means fighting (He held up his hands in fists as if fighting). I showed him an Indian style fighter and he said "Ga ou re Youn"... A fish that is very flat that swims on it's side with eyes bulging off one side... must be a flounder! The ou is pronounced like o. He says it very fast, of course, so that Ga ou re sounds like one word. Is there anyone out there that speaks Korean that can help me with the pronunciation? Tako Kichiwa (I don't speak much Japanese either, but that means 'I am kite crazed') Mike Eason = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 07:58:39 -1000 From: Mike Eason Message-Id: Organization: Communications Technology Center Subject: RE: Korean Fighters >From meason@ctc.ctc.edu Thu Jan 12 09:41:11 1995 Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 09:41:10 -0800 (PST) From: Mike Eason Subject: Re: Korean Fighters.... Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Status: RO X-Status: Hi Steve, Sorry if I wasn't clear about the ears on the KF. Yes, they are on the bottom two corners. I was talking with a Korean student here at this college (did you see the post about "Bong Pe Youn"). He says that sometimes, in his country the ears can be extended into tails as long as 2 feet long. I would guess that this would stabilize the kite, maybe too much for fighting. There is no string around the sail perimeter, not even a fold in the paper! But you're right, the paper is quite stiff--I would say about twice as stiff as a piece of regular bond typing paper. The paper is folded over and glued accross the top, over all three spar connections and glued on the back side. The spars are all glued to the back side of the sail along their whole length. That last detail has made me wonder how to accomplish similar construction with ripstop or Icarex. It might be o.k. to tension each stick between pockets at their ends?? I don't know if any sleeves or loops would be neccessary in the middle?? I look forward to the results of your trials. Have a good time on your vacation! I'm jealous, it's winter here, of course. It's been freezing and raining forever here in Washington State and, from watching the news, it looks like all of California is under several feet of water from their flooding. Tako Kichiwa, Mike Eason Oh yes, post your findings to rec.kites. It seems there are a lot of fighter flyers out there that are interrested in Bang Pe Youn. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 17:37:20 -1000 From: vraun@freenet.niagara.com (Vaino Raun) Message-Id: Organization: Niagara Peninsula Free-Net Subject: Re: Korean Fighters Mike Eason (meason@ctc.ctc.edu) wrote: : ....... the ears on the KF. I have a number of Korean fighters made by Mr. Min Jin Kee of Toronto who is quite a master of them. He's the fellow who was at Wildwood at the AKA & he finished third in the fighter competition. I was his coach..;-) The kites he sells for beginners have tails approx 2 ft. long. But they're removed once you get feel for them. : There is no string around the sail perimeter, not even a fold in the : paper! The more simpler, cheaper versions have unfinished edges. But I have one of his comp?? models which is finished masterfully. The edge has a very fine fold around the edges. The bamboo on this model has been finely finished in a round section. The others are simply split. : The paper is folded over and glued accross the top, over all three : spar connections and glued on the back side. His kites also have paper folded over the top spar (bowed). The simpler ones also have a small tab over the bottom corners over the spar. The better one has no other paper glued on. : The spars are all glued to the back side of the sail along their whole : length. These all are glued over the total length. The split spars are flatter. No. Was this posted in the last 2-3 weeks? - perhaps you could repost or send direct to me.... > I look forward to the results of your trials. > Have a good time on your vacation! I'm jealous, it's winter here, of > course. It's been freezing and raining forever here in Washington State I did indeed have a good time. Twelve brilliantly warm sunny cloudless days out of fourteen have given me a great tan, two weeks chin-fluff, and some degree of control over my delta two-line stunter that Santa brought me! (contemplating entering the novice section of the local kite-fest in March!) Regarding the issue of using Icarex etc for a Korean, I'll probably have a crack at using trad. bamboo first - I *like* using bamboo and paper, but need to concentrate on my workmanship! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Brorens (sjb@commarc.co.nz) - Fighters are Fun! - One line is plenty! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
