Subject: Lurker Leaps w/ a modest proposal

Hello, my name is Chuck Sigal and I Fly Kites.

I've been reading and enjoying rec.kites for some months now,
read the FAQs, voted for a pin, ordered some, and figured it was about
time to introduce myself.
I live in Albany, CA USA and fly regularly at Berkeley's North
Waterfront Park, where I first learned to fly stunters back in '85.
A single Rainbow, then a stack, then . . . For a while I got into
single-lines, Cody's, Conynes, Tetras, built some bought more.
Only flew dual-line when my tetra wouldn't.
An UltraLight Miguel . . . uh, . . . Cal Wasp, whatever. Sweet, sweet
kite.
Then one day a buggy arrived in Berkeley. Oh yea, this is way
fun, now I know why I learned to fly stunters.-:) Built one, got a
quad 25, and . . . oh yea, this is way way fun. Gotta get a bigger
kite. Oh well, enough about myself.
In my lurking I've noticed something: Notices of upcoming
festivals and lists for regions are posted (this is a good thing)
irregularly (this is a bad thing). Then some time later I'll see the
posting, "I'll be traveling in (country, region, continent, hemisphere)
>From (date) till (date). Does anyone know of any kite festivals there
around then?"
I think I might have read something, did I save it? No.
The FAQ refers to a www sight in Bremen. But alas, when I go there
and select 'List of Kiting-Events,' I end up in the same place as when
I select 'FTP Server', the Hawaii mirror, and I don't see any events
list. The on line form is nice but where's the list it's supposed to
feed? Well, it does say something about being experimental.
Here's my idea: a faq.festivals file kept in the archive in
Hawaii and perhaps a monthly posting to the news group, something like
"Coming up this month." Yes, I am voluntering. Here's the idea. E-mail
notice of upcoming events to me and I will add them to the list,
deleting listings as their dates pass so that we will have a perpetual
listing of what is coming.
If you think this is a GOOD idea or have suggestions,
please let me know.
If not keep it to your self -:)
Well I suppose you'll let me know that too.

Good winds and plenty of them.

Nice of you to offer...

If you were to do this properly, comprehensively and reliably, you would
recieve the gratitude of of all of us here. However, to do it properly
would require:

1) A subscription to American kite, Kitelines, Drachen, Kiting (AKA), The
Kiteflier (Kite society of GB) and Buggy Newz.

2) The determination to keep up with it, month-in, month-out. (this is
the reason why I'm not doing it...)

In return, you get only fame and glory.

Are you *sure* you want to do this...?

If you want to go for it, send me Email and I'll dig out all the calendars
>From my private archive to get you started.

Kite jumping is for morons. If you want to fly, get a hang-glider.
Netiquette-of-the-day: Think twice before posting!
You can FTP the kite FAQ's from ftp.hawaii.edu (directory /pub/rec/kites/faq)
The FAQ's have lists of kites, kite stores, kite questions, kite books & plans.
