Does anyone have the address or 1-800 numbers that I could write to/call for
kite catalogs?

I second this request. I love kites of any sort, but I live in SW
Virginia where there are very few places that even remotely decent kites
are available. I do get Into The Wind's catalog, but their selection of
fighters, my main interest, is a little skimpy. Also, I am thinking of
branching out into stunt kites, could anyone recommend something cheap
($20-$50) that's not too challenging and can take a beating until I get
the hang of it? Thanks in advance,

As a beginner, you can look for a Triby diamond stunter in that price
range but, be advised, these kites normally require a LOT of wind
compared to the higher priced ($100+) deltas. The real advantage of the
Trilbys is that they are unconditionally guaranteed for life so if you
find a way to annihilate your kite while learning, you get the next one
for FREE!!!! Other sources of kites in this price range:
		1)	Used Kites (I think most fliers still have
their first kites in their bags and many would
be willing to part with them for the right price)

		2)	Make One (you can make a delta stunter on the
out of wooden dowels or fibergalss tubing on
rip-stop, tyvek, or even plastic sheeting just
don't expect world-class performance out of the
			cheap-o stuff. Plans are plentiful)

		3)	'Kiddie kites'--At least one company I know
makes a 'kiddie' stunt kite with their
			traditional plastic framed, plastic method.
These can be had for ~$10 and fly respectibly
enough for a beginner to learn and you can use
the rest of your money to buy a good set of
Spectra lines for your 'good' kite when you
buy it (after you learn the basics).

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

	Adrian :-)

P.S. I have a couple of kites I could probably let go for $50 US but,
shipping, duty, and cost of flying lines would probably put them out of
your range. Also, if she's interested, my girlfriend has a purple
ripstop Trilby she may be willing to part with if you're interested.
Write for more info.

My first manuverable was a $10 (US) plasic swept wing delta from Toys R Us. It
was a great kite to learn on, took alot of abuse, and was part of my standard
kite bag (for newbies and kids on the beach) till I gave it to my nephew...
around 2 years I guess.

I keep a Dyna-Kite in my bag for ogglers. John Martins, the manufacturer,
shows how strong they are by slamming it nose 1st in to cement. It is a
rogolo sort of shape with a tail, which at least looks snappy for a
beginner, and they can be stacked in varying sized or the same size when
ready to move on to stacks.

The Peter Powel (sp?) and Trilbys are great to learn on.... Use the tail for
stability, then remove it when you're ready for more action. The Trilbys can
be linked together... (the set I have cam with 3).

I keep a Wind Demon in my bag for first-time fliers. It costs less than $50,
flies in a broad range of winds, is a delta so I can quickly teach someone to
self launch and then leave them on their own to crash and burn... It's a great
little kite; I find beginners think it more fun to fly than a Trlby.
