One of the most interesting, informative pieces I've seen about an event. Not only were the place ratings given along with the contestants name, but, their point scores and the type of kite that was flown. This is the first time I've been able to compare skill levels against the type of kite used. All in all, 20 Tracers were used which was the most prevalent kite on the field. Next in line, 8 Ultras, with third going to Talon F. In the Quad line category, RevII was most prevalent coming in with 10 with second place going to RevI. It would seem to me (IWSTM) that if the type of kite used in the events around the country were included in the results postings, one could make some pretty good comparisons between kites, skill levels, and rankings. For whatever its worth (FWIW), the manufacturers of kites might have some worthwhile feedback regarding the handling of their kite by all the different skill levels of the fliers. What your think? It really doesn't say much about skill level and the kites used. The fact that 20 Tracers were being flown is more of an indication that Skynasaur is doing a great job on the East Coast selling kites and not much more than that. As a manufacturer, the best indication of how well my kite performs is watching someone fly it. I watch the kite when beginners as well as more experienced folks fly my kite. I have learned a lot about how kites fly this way. It is nice having people win with my kites, and having someone win while flying one of my kites certainly helps with sales of the kite, but anyone who can afford to by a Katana can fly one. If they finish last while flying a Katana, it doesn't mean that a Katana is a bad kite. Many flyers are sponsored as well. Obviously, a larger company can afford to sponsor more flyers, so you will see more kites from larger companies at competitions. Overall, it is the pilot that determines the final ranking. There are many kites with similar performance levels and the best flyers, with a bit of acclimation time, can fly any number of kites and win. -- Marty Sasaki Harvard University Sasaki Kite Fabrications sasaki@noc.harvard.edu Network Services Division 26 Green Street 617-496-4320 10 Ware Street Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Cambridge, MA 02138-4002 phone/fax: 617-522-8546 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Mon, 15 May 1995 14:12:21 -1000 From: girbo@aol.com (Girbo) Message-Id: <3p8ql5$t39@newsbf02.news.aol.com> Organization: America Online, Inc.
