I've just stumbled across a 4-line dead-man advert in Drachen: These handles are similar to normal Quad handles in appearance. There is no triangular cage like the PL handles. The mechanism bears more than a passing resemblance to Peter's design, but does have some differences: - The moving part of the handle is bare metal, wrapping part-way round a foam grip - the part of the grip which most needs to be soft, is hard. - There is no mechanism for relesing the lower line. Sure, most of the time this is sufficient, but when you catch a light-pole at high speed, you want to release everything... - I am concerned that the mechanism may not release from all angles (particularly from a "brakes on" position), due to the angle of the slots and the lack of guide loop. It's not clear whether this is a justifiable concern without a field test. The advert is on page 61 of the latest Drachen. When Joe (the owner of Wind und Wellen, the company who manufactures these handles) ordered this ad, we discussed the issue. The idea behind these handles is that only the upper lines are automatically released in order to avoid that a released kite, particularly a kite with spars, causes damage when being blown away.
