After writing that, I looked around in (on?) the local mirror of SIMTEL20. I found a DOS version of UNIX compress in directory compress (!). The file names are comp430?.zip. So, all the bits and pices (uudecode, uncompress, tar and ghostscipt are available for DOS, too. And they are free. (I have not tried it yet).
