That North Shore VIP and Legend Moriah came in very handy. My wife broke a leading edge on a vented California WASP. (Of course, slamming it into a steel drum garbage can didn't help.....they've got far too many garbage cans on the beach this year and they're not the wimpy wire cage ones anymore.) BTW, thanks for your input on high wind kite walking.....I thought it was just me. Anyway, I'm thinking 3 ballets now; one for winds 0 - 2, another 3 - 10, and the third for above 10. It's getting too wind specific. I've never experienced 20 mph winds at Wildwood but I've only been there in May.....October may be a different story. One for no wind/light wind ( < 3-5 mph your call ) and then one for the rest of the time. With the equipment available to us these days( micro lights/indoor kites to vented kites ) there really is no need for more than two pieces of music. I've seen Scott Augenbaugh and Ron Reich fly "normal" routines in "fly or die" conditions. I guess I really mean a reasonable facsimile of their routines for that year. You really can't have a set routine for any wind. The conditions can change in the blink on an eye and that "routine" that you have worked so hard on can be totally messed up so you have to wing it. My "routines" are designed such that I know what I need to do at different parts of the music. The flying between the parts of the "routine" where I show the special stuff is just fill in. Last year, I used the same music across the whole range of wind.(Barely flyable winds to high winds) Also, once you start competing in multiple events per competition, it gets to be really difficult trying to memorize X events times Y>2 pieces of music. I am finding it confusing trying to memorize 4 pieces of music for my events.( Dual, Quad, Pairs, and Innovative/Freestyle Ballet) To pull of one piece of music, you just need three or four kites with overlapping wind ranges. An example would be kites that will fly in 0-5, 2-15, 10-30. Yes, I know that that last range is big, but once you get above 20 mph winds who can really perform well in those conditions? BTW, I totally agree with lowering the Maximum wind speed for competition to 20mph.( Last Kiting magazine ) Favorable Winds to All! You are probably right Sam, but I've got several ballets I enjoy doing and this gives me a good excuse to do them all. The above 10 mph ballet features leading edge landing and take offs which are easier with more wind. The 3 - 10 mph ballet features kite walking which is much more difficult in higher winds. I suppose I could use this ballet in 0 - 2 mph but I already have a low wind ballet and this one requires more speed. Besides, Sam, haven't you heard of soul flying. Some people don't pre-choreograph nor practice any routine. I don't do this (aside from the NYSKC Magical Mystery Tape Tour - BTW, Susie Edison was asking what we thought about a pairs mystery tape tour this year.) >BTW, I totally agree with lowering the Maximum wind speed for >competition to 20mph.( Last Kiting magazine ) I like that too Sam, but it would totally eliminate competition at Berkeley, California and Sandy Beach, Hawaii. Mark Virgilio (uspehmev@ibmmail.com) Disclaimer: I have never claimed to fly anything like Scott or Ron. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 17 May 1994 05:38:50 -1000 From: uspehmev@ibmmail.COM Message-Id: Organization: Division of Applied Sciences, Harvard University Subject: RE: Sail Stretch ----------------------- Mail item text follows --------------- Fowarded for Sam Ritter... Some of my best flying is "soul flying", but I can't always repeat it for competition. I am going to be doing a lot more of it now that my but is getting kicked out of Experienced Class. I'm really competitive right now 'cause I want to fly at nationals this year, and I'm not taking anything for granted even though I currently have good standing. My ballets are never the same, I may use the same music, but the moves are always different. I know at certain parts of the music that I have to do a certain type of move: land, snap turn, loops, etc. I really prefer soul flying and demo flying to competition 'cause that what I enjoy most. ** the wind speed thing ** I don't think that competition would be eliminated at those sites. The organizers of those events can still change to the old rule as long as they publish their specific change 30 days in advance. This is so that people can know about it and be prepared in advance. I think most organizer would treat that wind rule as they do the minimum. Some may treat it as "fly or die." I think that the main thought in this change is *saf Please post this to r.k if you want, I can't right now 'cause of the bug in the gateway software. ----------------------- End of Mail Text = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
