Is it possible to adapt a wheeled buggy for snow use (with skis) or ice use
(with skates)? If so, what kind of modification features are needed (ski/skate
length)?

 Regards, Pierre.

Aren't there Land Sailers (I don't know if that's what they're called)
that are made to go on ice? Would they use some kind skate blade like on
an Ice Skate?

If you can get ahold of it, check out American Kite, summer 1994,
v7 n2. It has a 2 page article on ice-buggying in the Netherlands.
Kite Lines also had something on ice-buggys but I can't find it
right now.
The skates on these buggys are as sharp as knives because of the
different forces (compared to regular ice-skating).  Don't crash;
you might lose some fingers (or the John Bobbit...).

I have ice blades made for my buggy, but I never had enough nerve or ice
to use them.
I believe that Fran has a new Peter Lynn attachment. Is that right Fran?
I know I am interested, I believe it to be safer.

I've seen some of the local ice (sial)boats. They are big, heavy, fast, and
their skates are sharp (V-shaped instead of flat like foot skates). How would
the speed of an ice buggy compare to a wheeled one? Would ice would provide
less friction than snow (with skis)?

Peter has been trying to solve the ice/snow problems for quite some time.
The trouble is that there are so many different conditions to cater for,
>From soft powder to solid ice. The tendancy seems to be study the
conditions one day, make a prototype that might work on it, then go out
the next day to find that the surface is completely different.

I've seen photos of ice-buggies, which basically have skates instead of
wheels. Initially, they had handling difficulties because the front would
break free before the rear (unlike a buggy, where generally the rear
swings out first), but solved this (I don't want to go into the precise
detail without asking permission). They did, however, need to be *very*
sharp, and with the open blade design they stood a good chance of doing
serious harm.

When Peter was in England this summer, he had a new design - wide, like a
ski for soft snow, but with an "edge" protruding from the middle, for
ice. This gives both soft and hard surface performance, together with
improved safety - the blade was no longer quite so open.
The one I saw was constructed from sheet steel, and reported to perform
well in all circumstances, except for the fact that it was so noisy
as to be unuseable! I believe that he now makes them from fibreglass
to solve this final problem and that they are available to order.

Having asked this of those who have done it, the answer is that the
speed is irrelivant. It so smooth, slick, quiet and effortless,
getting speed from the lightest whisps of wind, that no-one cares.
It is a spiritual experience.

It seems that in NZ, at least, the conditions for smooth ice co-incide
with minimal wind...

Peter Lynn will be sending Fritz a pair of his new skis for a buggy in
December. Fritz plan to try them new years weekend with Lee and Sue up in
Erie. He will probally leave them in Erie with Sue where they will get
more Use.
