Date: Sat, 7 Jan 1995 21:16:58 -1000 From: andrew@tug.com (Andrew Beattie) Message-Id: Organization: /usr/lib/news/organisation Subject: Spam We seem to be getting more than our fare share of Spam recently. Spam is a posting that is posted inapropriately to a large number of different newsgroups. Often they are advertising, and often for pyramid schemes. Unsurprisingly, they stir up a lot of hatred - Junk-mail is a pain, but when the receiver has to pay for delivery, the blood boils faster. Reasonable responses to Spam include: - Ignoring it. - Writing a short note of complaint to the originator and the postmaster at the originating site. Just strip off the user name and replace with "postmaster", for example, the postmaster round here is postmaster@tug.com. - Murder of the originator would fall within the category of "praiseworthy", but beware that the Spam may be forged to look like it came from someone else. Bad things to do include: - Following up with another post. Check the "Newsgroups" line - it may be cross-posted to a whole bunch of other places. If a Spam produces just a few followups in each of several thousand newsgroups then the spike in net-usage is break machines that were only just coping in the first place. - Mail-bomb the user. Typically the site administrator will close the account as soon as he becomes aware of the Spam - maybe an hour or two after it gets fired, but the deluge of mail-bombs will cause severe problems for the rest of the users and the people that supply the site - the bomb does a lot of damage, but it usually hurts the wrong people. This is especially true if they have abused an open and valuable service like the anon server in Finland. There is a newsgroup dedicated to fighting this stuff. As I recall, the name is alt.current-events.net-abuse. There is also the great Cancelmoose[tm] who spots these things and forges cancel control messages in order to wipe them off the net as soon as possible to limit the damage. The only postings I have ever seen come from it tend to be pyramid schemes and useless/inflamatory postings from those who don't want their identities known. Am I missing something here?
