Subject: Sunday Drive to Junction (long article)

Took a trip to Junction this weekend and met with some kiters who were
out flying kites. A camera crew was out on the field preparing a
documentary on kites. When I drove up they had Stan Swanson in makeup
and sitting under a tree with all the reflective disks and such with a
camera about two feet from his nose. Out on the field was an
interesting bunch of what George Peters delightfully calls his Wind
Garden.

My son , Jeremy and I got there a tad bit early so we were asked to
come back a few hours later since there were still classes in
secession. We took off to visit the local metropolis of Junction, TX.
In less than 5 miles you can drive up and down the sleepy town which is
still asleep before noon.

About 1:45pm we got back to the Texas Tech Center and parked under one
of the large trees in front of the Administration building. From where
I was it appeared that the winds were perfect for kiting. The huge
Texas sized field was divided for single and dual line kites. In the
distance, away from the administration building I could see two dual
line kites playing follow the leader. But in the foreground there were
single line kites and banners under the shade.

Spectators, mostly locals from around Junction came in to see the open
house kite fly. Although, spectators could only watch they enjoyed the
lazy relaxing Sunday. George and Michelle Weber were one of the first
individuals I ran into. Michelle was so ecstatic about completing her
kite which took a whole year to make. She started it in Junction last
year and finally got to finish it this year. Next Gail Bell came over
and said hello before heading out to assist Dick who looked like he was
in kite heaven.

We walked around the perimeter of the field and said hi to Marti
Dermer, Richard was out on the field trying to put up one of George
Peters Cat Man kites. Getting frustrated at the bridling he said,
if it doesnt want to cooperate it coming down.... At this point
Jeremy and I got a better view of the sky and could see all the
different kites. On down the road Henry and Leona Clark set up a
cabana and were out showing off everything
they had been making over the weekend.

On the way back we ran into EW Redman whos black roller was almost
500+ft up and looked like it was flying on thermals. George Peters
started putting up a few of his bugs and then came over to say hello.
Then Carl Crowell spotted me and said, YOU!!! Oh my was I ever
frightened. The ominous figure of Carl came ever closer. The first
thing he said was, boy have you made one hell of a reputation for
yourself. We laughed and talked about some business when Katherine
walked up to greet us.

I had a chance to meet briefly with Martin Lester, Jose Sainz and a
artist from Montreal who had some of the most expressive painting on
traditional Japanese kites, Robert Trepanier. Of course Charm Lindner
came up and gave me a great big hug. Then Pat Sotish [sp] told me that
Charlie was in the building making fish. So off we went to find
Charlie. Jeremy and I went into the class rooms and found Elmer Warton
and Stretch Tucker taking lessons on building traditional Japanese
Hatas. (Wrong room)

Down the hall we could see the international display of kites. I
looked into each classroom in awe. Jeremy just wondered why they
called him Stretch. We finally found Charlie finishing up a his class
on making fish. I asked if I could take a copy of the directions. On
one condition he says, only if I build one first. I can not turn down
a chance like this. Jeremy and I got the ribbon and started going at
the task of building a fish. Charlie came over and gave us hands on
instruction. In no time we were sporting our own red and yellow fish.
Charlie is a wonderful instructor.

The day was going by so fast. Afterwards Jeremy and I headed back
outside, but could hear the voice you couldnt ever mistake. Making
sure that everything was in order Betty Street was going through a
check list. Back out on the field Bill Lockhart was sitting down
untangling something and a group gathered under a tree to relax. Joe
Hedzinki [sp], was talking away about the business of kiting
manufacturing with Stan Swanson.

Then out of the blue Carl comes up with an individual who he said would
like to meet me. A bit taken by this Im really not sure what is going
on, since I am so shy. Most of the kite events I have attended lately
I have had the chance to run into several rec.kiters. One even wanted
to punch me. (ha) Its usually a pleasant surprise when we finally do
meet. And this was no different. So this is hello to (and I hope I
spell his name right) Marcio.

Congratulated Scott Skinner on his arrival to rec.kites. He says hes
excited about getting into some of the hot topics. Like which way
water flows.

The day went by so fast I was just getting conformable when the 5:00pm
bell struck and the kite police came around to run off all the
visitors. Jeremy and I went back to the bridge crossing the Llano
river stopped on the side of the road to pick up a few rocks and had a
rock skipping contest. After that we got in the car and drove home.

Jermery looked at me and said, Dad, I had a real good time today.

Hi Frank,

thank you for the long article about Junction! It was really great to
read it. I would have liked to join the retreat, but unfortunately
did not have any time.... :-(. I was there 1993 and had a great time!
