Subject: Toronto Kitefliers Fun Fly overview

It was yet another great weekend to fly kites in the Toronto area,
and the TKF once again held their annual fun fly at Ashbridges Bay.

The weekend began with a casual afternoon of flying at Humber Bay
park, with most of the local regulars in attendance. After a
dinner gathering at a near by eating establishment we returned to
the park for our annual night fly. There were about 20-25 people
flying, perhaps 40-45 in attendance.

Noteworthy efforts during the night fly included; Mike Lin and Chris
Lee, who rocket launched a stunt kites with 2 two D sized model
rocket engines, and a "Spirits In The Wind" team practice in the
dark. Ron Clawson, of Spirits, was debuting a new kite design of
his own conception.

Sunday morning brought clear skys (at first) and light breezes. The
group that gathered at Ashbrides Bay included people from all over
the Toronto area, Niagara region, Kitchener-Waterloo, and even a
rec.kiter from Rochester (Hello Joe!)

The event featured demos by several area teams and individuals, some
warming up for the competition in Wildwood. The wind took all day
to figure itself out, but this had little effect on the fliers.

The somewhat infamous John Compton attempted to buggy down the
beach behind a 200+ square foot parachute. The soft sand prevented
any upwind tacking, so John walked the buggy and kite a mile back to
our group.

Numerous single line kites graced the sky, and we even managed a
trio of parabear drops. The afternoon came to a close with our
annual rokakku battle, which saw 6 teams (I think?) do battle.
After a near victory in Dayton a few weeks ago Dr. Merv Coopers
team won, flying a (hot-rodded) blue and green rokakku by Green's of
England.

No doubt I've overlooked a few people, kites, and activities.
Perhaps someone else who was there will help fill in the gaps in my
memory.
