Hi I'm completely new to this net thing so please forgive me now for any
netiquette screw-ups I make.
First, What is traction? I don't mean to ask a dumb question but
I haven't been flying kites for very long.
Second, are there any Canadians out there and are there any
festivals/competitions in Canada, particularly Ontario? If so when are
they and where?

Just curious

In fact I was thinking of saying something but thought I'd leave it to those
better qualified, but since I'm here....

'Traction' refers to the business of getting a kite to drag you along. You
are allowed to reduce friction/bruises by putting yourself on wheels or in
water ( or even on (snow) skis - I think it's been done ).

If you select wheels, the device of choice is called a 'buggy' - a low - slung
unsprung thing with three wheels, akin to a land-yacht but different (:).

Can't help vis a vis Canada ( thats the French place between Greenland and
Seattle, yeah ? :))

Four Winds Kite Festival & Canadian Sport Kite Championship

Spring has always meant the beginning of the "kiting
season" for most kiting civilians everywhere. While those of us who
have been "Tako-Kichi" (Japanese for "kite crazy") for any length
of time realize that there is no special season for our favourite
activity, look out because the sport of kiting is taking off
everywhere with new ideas and lots of fun.

Come to the 7th annual Four Winds Kite Festival in
Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Bring your family and friends, join us
for two days of fun, food and great kite flying.
The Kortright Centre For Conservation, located 4km west
of Canada's Wonderland along Major Mackenzie drive, then south on
Pine Valley Rd., is holding it's annual kite festival, featuring
the "Fifth Annual 1993 Canadian Stunt Kite Championship" which will
be held on May 1 & 2 1993, between 10 am & 4 pm daily. (Further
information & Registration forms: Call Colleen Dupuis (416-832-

I would be happy to answer them. (jpoy@rd.hydro.on.ca)

to "take off" and test your flying skills. "Hey come on", its a
great place to get your feet wet if you have never competed before.

During last year's Niagara Falls International Kiting event,
Richard Gareau, who works for Spyro-Jet and Francoise Trudel
President of the Quebec Kite Fliers, told me that they were
organizing a New Kite Festival which will include a single line and
stunt kite competion. This event will take place in Montreal Quebec

event. The date for this event will be on June 3 to 6 1993. (I hope
we have a chance to attend.)

located at the University of Regina. Plenty of flying room for all.

Pacific Rim Kite Festival & 2nd Annual Canadian West Coast S.K.C

Last year our team ("Aviators", Jeff, Jason, and myself)
took a trip out in B.C. to attend a family wedding which was
postponed because the groom, an airforce officer, had to leave for
the peace keeping mission in Yugoslavia. So, unexpectedly we had
the opportunity to attend this fun event.
The flying field is situated in Vanier Park, which has
just breathe taking view of the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky's. The
weather was sunny and warm with just a nice light breeze and fliers
came from Washington, Oregon and the surrounding area. The
beautiful single line kites filled the sky which added just the
right touch to the kite festival.
This was the first year they held a Sport Kite
Competion and it was limited to Novice flier's, but it was well
organized by the B.C. Kite flier's and supported by Genny and Eric
Forsberg of the A.K.A. Anyway we had a great time meeting old
friends and making many new one's.

Getting back to this year's event it will be split over
two weekends:

... Pacific Rim Kite Festival July 10, & 11 1993
For further info call ... 604-321-6409

... 2nd Canadian West Coast S.K.C. July 17,1993.
For further info call ... 604-685-9877

Mark these dates on this years calender, for what I am
sure will be some entertaining events.

Hope to meet up with you all some where along the line,
till then happy flying!

                                                 Jim & Jeff Poy
                                                 Aviators

P.S. I will try to update you all with more upcoming 1993 kiting
events when the dates are finalized. (I hear that our cousins down
east (New Brunswick) are trying to organize a Kite Festival this
year & the Annual Toronto Kite Fliers Festival will be held either
in late Aug. or Sept.)

Kite traction refers to the science (?) of using kites to do useful work
in moving things about. The crudest technique is to hold on to a powerful
kite and let it drag you down wind. For this, you can use almost
anything as ling as it's got enough stink - a stack of flexifoils or a
large playsail are both effective. Whilst this can be exciting to begin
with, it has there severe limitation of only taking you downwind. The real
fun begins when you stand or sit on something that allows you to control which
way you travel. Suitable devices include:
Kite buggies (a low-slung tricicle with foot steering
	Snow Skis
	Grass Skis
	Water Skis
	Boats of various designs
	Rollerblades
	Ice skates
	Ice buggies
	Sledges
With an efficient modern traction kite, capable of flying well into the wind,
impressive speeds can be attained - typically several times wind speed, thus
traction kiters are used to flying with the wind in their face!
