I have recently bought an X4i at a local kite shop. Other than the kite
and 6ft. and 20ft. lines, nothing was included in the bag. Can anyone
tell me more about this thing since all I associated with X4i so far was
the quicker variety of Ford Sierra.

Thank you

..I think Steeve Thomas will probably also answer this post so just a couple
of words about the X4i. The kite is one of the lightest kites available
and weighs in right at one ounce. The <i> in X4i stands for indoors. Designed
by Peer Werba and built by Buena Vista Kites, the X4i can honestly fly in
no wind and actually becomes a real fast mover in about 3 mph. The
lines were provided in different lengths so a flyer could change to the
short lines for indoor flying.

Peter Werba flew his Master's Individual Ballet routine at Berkley with
this kite and did all sorts of neat stuff in the very, very unusual light
winds that prevailed at Berkley this year.

I's a fun kite and the price of under seventy dollars US makes it a good
bargain for light wind and no wind flyers.

I can't add much to this, except that the X4I is also being used for
what we call, "street flying" in which you'll notice that the X4I can
be flown *anywhere*: in front of your house, in the airport, at the
shopping mall, on the roof of your production facility in San
Francisco, etc. The light weight, and small size, and the short lines
really opens up the possibilities...

One note--for Indoor flying, remove the top-spreader...

The Buena Vista X4i is simply amazing! Although I was originally given a
'bum steer' when one kite shop person told me that it was just so flimsy
that if it was flown outdoors and it crashed, it would be 'toast', I soon
learned that nothing could be further from the truth!

The X4i is as far as I'm concerned, the toughest kite in existence! When I
finally decided to buy one because of the obnoxiously horrible lack of good
kite wind here in the so-called 'windy' city, the person who sold it to me
took the spars at both wing tips and actually bent them around into a
circle until they touched each other! Absolutely amazing! I'd like to see
ANY other kite withstand that!

I carry my X4i in my bag at all times so that when the wind refuses to
cooperate, out comes that little Icarex & micro carbon gem to save the day!
Sure, the wind here is sometimes so terrible that it often shifts and may
at times even push the kite toward me, which of course, then makes flying
it a real challenge, but if any kite is going to fly when the wind looks
hopeless, it's the X4i.

The X4i also has its own unique way of complaining if the wind should
become too strong. When flown in higher winds into the power zone, it
literally convulses, violently rattling, rumbling, rustling, and making
quite a horrendous noise while doing so. This is completely harmless to the
kite however. It just makes flying during those brief moments very
difficult.

As for its edge handling, I have yet to see any other kite even begin to
come close to the performance of the X4i. It literally hangs at the edge,
unable to go any further around but remaining firmly 'pasted' in the sky,
ready to respond to even the slightest control to bring it back further
within the wind window. And while it's not a particularly fast kite in
terms of its forward speed, it sure can turn in a snap! Perhaps, I'll
someday get the chance to actually fly it indoors. As for now, I'm
seriously considering going to 80' or more 30# Spectra lines. That ought to
be really interesting!

The X4i flies like a dream indoors! It was raining this morning so after
karate class I kept the gym for some indoor flying. My wife, who is dubious
at best because of all the money I have spent on kites, was even impressed
by the kite.

*cringe*

Yes, the kite's tough, but, um, be nice to it, ok? :-)

As a side note, the X4I had (has) a lot of testing on the *roof* of
Buena Vista Kite Company in San Francsico. Up here, if you manage to
dodge some of the resident barrels of Toxic Waste or occasional dead
pigeon, you'll note that the surface of the roof is veritable
sandpaper.

As such, the X4I's gone through some testing in the durability
department, and a few things have been added to help it hold up...

Still, it's an indoor kite!

Have fun...

 St> *cringe*

It's not all THAT bad!

St> Yes, the kite's tough, but, um, be nice to it, ok? :-)

I'm nice to it...and all my other kites too. For instance, I only fly them
over soft grassy areas and haven't yet even gotten interested in ground
work as there's usually a greater potential for tearing the sails. Yes, I'd
say I'm good to my kites.

Ouch!

The micro carbon frame is truly amazing.

St> Still, it's an indoor kite!

Eventually, I'll get around to actually trying it indoors.
