The future of #kites
Have you noticed that DALnet has been exceedingly crap recently?
It's getting more and more difficult to find a server.
Other people suffer because their ISP is K-lined by DALnet.
I am considering building an IRC server
to only serve #kites.
The general idea is:
-
The Server would not be connected to DALnet or EFnet or any other network
(If it gets popular, then we might look for another server on the other
side of the pond and link them together, but I think that's a long way off...)
-
It would only serve #kites
-
It would be throttled hard. It would only have enough
bandwidth to serve the handful of folk who use #kites.
But it's only worth doing this at all if everyone wants
to move over.
There are a number of issues to resolve.
-
I don't want to manage it.
I don't want to own it.
I Just want a secure future for #kites.
I get enough crap already
("Subject: Andrew Beattie Sucks" and everything...). We need a bunch of
people to take responsibility for political decision that need to be
made (if we have limited bandwidth and some plonker abuses it, then
I don't want it to be me that makes the K-line decision).
-
We need to come to a consensus agreement as to whether or not it is a good
idea.
-
It needs a domain name. I can give away irc.reckites.com, or we can
register a new one.
To discuss these issues, I've opened a mailing list.
(because IRC chat is somewhat ummm... transient)
